good morning. good to be with you. i'm terrell brown. compared to last week's presidential debate last night's face off between vice president joe biden and congressman paul ryan was like a shoot out at the ok corral. from the get go it was a pull no punches performance by both candidates. they squared off on everything from the economy to foreign affairs. randall pinkston is at the debate site in danville, kentucky. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. both candidates came here on a mission. congressman ryan to criticize the obama administration's failures and republican solutions while vice president biden was defending the presidential record and also complaining about the republican plan for the nation. >> i will be very specific -- >> reporter: vice president joe biden wasted no time challenging congressman paul ryan's take on foreign policy. >> with all due respect that's a bunch of malarky. not a single thing you said is

accurate. >> reporter: the vice president and ryan clashed over the economy. taxes. and medicare. with the democrat often on the attack. >> they are holding hostage the middle class tax cut. about time they take some responsibility. >> reporter: but ryan fired back. he slammed the obama administration's economic record. >> this is not what a real recovery looks like. we need real reforms for a eal recovery and that's what mitt romney and i are proposing. >> reporter: after several heated exchanges ryan said romney's performance last week is motivating the vice president. >> i know you're under a lot of duress to make up for lost ground. >> reporter: as for who won it depends who you ask. instant polls taken right after the debate are mixed. in a cbs news poll of uncommitted voters 50% thought the vice president won. 31% sided for ryan and 19% called it a tie. not surprisingly both sides claimed victory. mitt romney's campaign said biden seemed off balance and strange.

the president's team said the debate exposed the risk of electing a romney/ryan ticket. the candidatesalso disagreed over foreign policy. congressman ryan pointing to the death of four americans in libya as an indication of weakness abroad while biden said romney's campaign talks first before they know what the facts are. reporting live in danville, i'm randall pinkston. that cbs news poll found the overall impressions of both vice presidential candidate improved after the debate. 55% think biden is somebody they can relate to. 48% think ryan is. both candidates on how uncommitted voters feel about them as being effective president. we break down last night's face

off. >> reporter: joe biden came out very aggressive in this debate and maintained that tone throughout. to republicans he was rude. they were using the word unhinged, complaining about his smirking. for democrats it's exactly what they wanted to see. a week ago president obama was very passive in his debate against mitt romney. it was frustrating for democrats. they wanted to see him take to it mitt romney. he didn't do that. joe biden took it to paul ryan. he interrupted. he dominated the debate. as for ryan he was fine. he was on message. he certainly didn't alienate anyone. this night was about joe biden and about changing the narrative and getting democrats more excited and engaged in this race. now a vice presidential debate almost certainly is not going to change the fundamentals of the contest but it is going to give the democrats a reason to feel good and it is going to set president obama up to be more aggressive and take it to romney in the presidential debate next week. >> two more presidential debates left. next tuesday in hempstead, new york.

and october 22nd in boca raton, florida. you can watch both of them right here on cbs. federal health officials said they contacted 12,000 of the roughly 14,000 people injected with that taint eed steroid linked to the deadly outbreak of meningitis. infections have been reported in 11 states. 14 people have died. we have more on the drug company that sold the contaminated drug. >> reporter: the new england compounding center shipped more than 17,000 vials of a single drug to 23 states. the safety director of the massachusetts department of health said certainly necc was not operating as far as the investigation has seen so far in accordance with the massachusetts licensing regulation. that's because massachusetts law says compounding pharmacies which mix custom made medicines must have a prescription for every patient for each dose it

sends out. necc shipped the tainted steroid out to medical facilities in bulk without these prescriptions. cbs news called the necc for a response. the company did not immediately respond. government health officials acknowledge there's a regulatory gap when it comes compounding pharmacies. for instance massachusetts does not have the authority to track how many vials of a drug are produced. at the federal level the food and drug administration does not have clear authority to examine records in a compounding pharmacy. fda is seeking more authority. this pharmacist served on a package creating federal regulations for the compounding pharmacy industry. >> who is minding the store in terms of regulation? >> the fda has worked very hard over the last several years to try to promulgate regulations, to clearly define when does a compounding pharmacy exceed its

pharmacy and become a manufacturer under the purview of the fda. >> the cdc found so far the main fungus responsible is an organism that has never been found to cause meningitis before and a panel of infectious disease experts has been called in how to figure out how to diagnose it and treat it. lawyers for the suspect in the colorado movie theater shooting want a preliminary hearing in the case postponed until next year. james holmes' attorney said they need more time to go through the evidence. he's accused of killing 12 people and wounding at least 58 people. and kenneth feinberg met with victims and their families while trying to figure out how to distribute $5 million in charitable donations. >> our goal you get the money before thanksgiving. done. no obligation on your part other than to accept it. what you do with it is your own business. >> holmes' preliminary hearing is currently scheduled for november.

he has yet to enter a plea. overseas hezbollah said it launched a drone that made it into israeli airspace early last saturday. the fighter jet shot down the unmanned aircraft. it destroyed near an israeli nuclear facility. israel said the unmanned craft carried no weapons and appeared to be on a reconnaissance mission. when we come back, road trip, the shuttle "endeavour" makes a slow journey take it through the streets of los angeles as it heads to its permanent home. this is the morning news. home. this is the morning news.

move the stock market. the dow lost 18 points on thursday. the nasdaq was off two points. a japanese cell phone company wants to buy 70% of struggling sprint-nextel corporation. sprint is the third largest cell phone company in the u.s. it continues to lose high paying subscribers to verizon and at&t. it is valued at about $13 billion. the price of corn jumped 5% on the commodities market and will mean higher prices for meats and other products that contain corn. throughout damaged corn for december delivery finished at $7.73 a bushel on thursday. the agriculture department expects the harvest will be the smallest in six years. the drought in the corn belt is the worst in half a century. and a penny more for your thoughts at least if you're planning to mail them the financially strapped postal service said. the price of a first class

monsanto leading the way. >> i'm a worried grocer. >> reporter: ray martinez said labelling would be a costly burden for grocers. >> the paper work alone is a nightmare. every shipment we get, every product, every time, we need to keep records, written records of that. >> reporter: the vast majority of corn and soy beans grown in this country come from genetically modified seeds engineered in a lab to resist insects and pesticides. those crops are then used in a huge variety of processed food from cereals to soda. prop 37 would inform shoppers those products contain gmo. the food giants claim the labels will make consumers think there's something wrong with the food. the pro labelling side insist as growing number of studies are linking genetically modified foods to possible health risks including obesity and allergies.

a soldier got a hero's welcome when he returned home to michigan this week after his third tour of duty in afghanistan. elaine quijano reports it's been a long journey from the battlefield to a high school homecoming. >> reporter: the homecoming game in michigan always draws a big crowd. but this year was special. they welcomed home one of their favorite football stars, a man who went on to become army staff sergeant travis mills. >> this is awesome. okay. yeah. >> reporter: mills was on his third tour in afghanistan. in april a bomb exploded beneath him. >> sat my bag down and five, six seconds later i woke up on the ground. >> reporter: his 6'3", 250 pound body bore the brunt of the

blast. two other men were wounded. he woke up at a military hospital in germany four days later. >> you turned 25 years old and you're told you don't have any arms or legs. what goes through your mind? >> i thought of my soldiers. how are they doing. and then i guess i was rejecting my wife's phone calls. i was embarrassed. i didn't want to talk to anybody. >> what were you embarrassed about? >> i felt i was a horrible person, i did something wrong in life and getting paid back for it but that's not it. >> reporter: he's been recovering at walter reed national military medical center for six months. he's learning to use four prosthetic limbs and to do things once routine like feeding his daughter. >> what's it like being back in your home town? >> it's great. drove into town. i couldn't believe the yellow ribbons, the signs. welcome home travis. >> reporter: more than 6,000 people lined main street to
